Healthy Eating During Vacations

By: Jillian Doiron, Student Network Representative from the University of Manitoba

Vacations are all about relaxation, exploration, and, of course, indulging in delicious food! But if you’re trying to maintain a balanced diet, it can be tricky to navigate restaurant menus, buffets, and local street food without overdoing it. The good news? You don’t have to choose between enjoying your trip and eating healthy. Here’s how to strike a balance:

1. Plan Ahead

Before you go, research restaurants and local dishes that offer nutritious options. Packing healthy snacks like nuts, protein bars, or dried fruit can also help curb hunger between meals.

2. Stay Hydrated

Traveling can dehydrate you, making you mistake thirst for hunger. Carry a reusable water bottle and sip throughout the day to stay energized and avoid unnecessary snacking.

3. Prioritize Protein and Vegetables

When dining out, choose meals with a good source of protein (like fish, chicken, or legumes) and plenty of vegetables. This will keep you full longer and prevent energy crashes.

4. Be Mindful of Portions

Restaurant servings can be larger than necessary. Share meals, opt for appetizers instead of full entrees, or ask for a to-go box if possible.

5. Stay Active

Walking, biking, or engaging in local activities can help balance out extra calories and keep you feeling great throughout your trip.

6. Enjoy Without Overindulging

Savour your meals, eat slowly, and listen to your body. You don’t have to say no to dessert—just be mindful of portions and frequency. By making small, intentional choices, you can enjoy your vacation to the fullest without feeling sluggish or regretful. After all, food is part of the adventure—so embrace it wisely!
