You are invited to attend an exclusive farm tour designed to highlight food and farming. This invite-only event is open to Registered Dietitians, Professional Home Economists, food writers, bloggers, chefs, culinary instructors and other food industry professionals. There is no charge to attend.
WHEN: Thursday, October 3. With travel, this will be a full day excursion (8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., approximate)
This tour will be hosted by Farm & Food Care Ontario, an agricultural outreach organization and registered charity supported by farm families, agribusinesses, agricultural socieities, food processors, food companies and more. Visit Piccioni Bros. Mushroom Farm, a Canadian mushroom grower with a farm just outside Dundas, Ontario. The farm was founded in 1964 by Battista and Tony Piccioni and is now run by Lorenzo Piccioni and his sister, Anna Piccioni. As with other Canadian mushroom farms, Piccioni Bros. Mushroom Farm grows fresh mushrooms year-round. Guests will dive into the world of cultivated Canadian mushrooms and explore the journey from the growing rooms to the plate! Learn what it takes to grow this nutrient powerhouse of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants;

The day’s second stop will feature the technology and innovation of today’s modern dairy operations. The Spoelstra family owns and operates Roy-A-Lea Farms Ltd. in Binbrook, a mixed farm where they raise beef cattle and milk 60 Holstein cows with robotic milking and feeding technology. The family also grows corn, soybeans, wheat, and hay on 1900 acres. In addition, they raise Clydesdale horses and sell corn and soybean seeds to local growers. The Spoelstras are passionate and progressive farmers and firm believers in doing what you love to make a living. The family was awarded the BMO Farm Family Award in 2017, recognizing their dedication to Ontario’s agriculture sector, community, and rural way of life.
